War Pass finishes last in Tampa Bay Derby

Horseracing Betting Lines

03/15/2008 - Oldsmar, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - In one of the biggest upsets in recent memory, Eclipse Award winner War Pass lost as the 1-20 favorite in Saturday's $300,000 Tampa Bay Derby. The 2007 champion two-year-old actually finished last in the 1 1/16 mile race, won by Big Truck.

Last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile champ was pinched at the start of the race and could never get comfortable under jockey Cornelio Velasquez. Taking the early lead in the race was Make Me Zach, followed by Gentleman James and War Pass.

Up the backstretch, Gentleman James had the lead with Make Me Zach second and Cigar Man running in third. War Pass was struggling on the outside in fourth, the first time in his career he wasn't on the lead.

Around the turn for home, War Pass made a move into third, but was unable to advance pass the leader -- Make Me Zach.

Down the stretch, War Pass could not keep up with field and was eased to last in the seven-horse field. Big Truck, ridden by Eibar Coa, went on to win by a neck over Atoned with Dynamic Wayne finishing third.

Rounding out the order of finish was Make Me Zach, Cigar Man, Gentleman James and War Pass.

The time for the Tampa Bay Derby was 1:44.25 on a fast track.

Owned by Eric Fein, Big Truck collected $180,000 with the victory. The colt has won three of seven lifetime starts for $336,880. He was coming off a second-place result in Tampa Bay Downs' Sam F. Davis Stakes in February.

Big Truck is trained by Barclay Tagg, who saddled Funny Cide to win the 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.

Big Truck returned $16.40, $5.80 and $25.20. Atoned paid $6.60 and $27.80, and Dynamic Wayne paid $76.40 to show. Of the show wager total of $765,884, $717,212 was bet on War Pass.

2007 NFL Football Betting Preview

“You play to win the game!”

Those are the words of notoriously intense head coach Herman Edwards. Unfortunately, from a bettors’ perspective, most coaches don’t feel that way about the NFL preseason. August is a time to evaluate young players, finalize the depth chart and pray your star players stay healthy.

The trick to making money during the exhibition schedule is identifying coaches – like Edwards – who can’t stand losing even when there's nothing on the line.

The New York Jets betting won 15 of 21 preseason games and went 14-7 against the spread (ATS) during Edwards’s five-year tenure with the club. In his first season as the Kansas City Chiefs field boss, the team improved from 0-4 to 2-2.

Identifying win-a-holics like Edwards is a good start if you plan betting the preseason – even though most say you shouldn’t ... but what the hell do they know anyway?

Here’s a brief rundown of two teams that have a habit of winning during the second-stringers’ season, and another club that has a good chance of exceeding this year.

New York Giants betting lines

Playing in the media hub of North America can be stressful but the press can’t write anything negative about the way Tom Coughlin’s boys play in the preseason. The Giants won and covered all four games last summer, improving their record to 7-1 both straight up (SU) and against the spread over the last two years.

Coughlin has shown he’s not afraid to give his starters more time in the second preseason game than most of his colleagues, no doubt one of the reasons his team has been so dominant.

Dallas Cowboys betting lines

Bettors can count on America’s team early on. The Cowboys are 14-6 both SU and ATS since 2002 in warm-up contests. Former coach Bill Parcells, the coach of the team the last four years, has an intimidating, in-your-face presence – surely a reason Dallas has had so much early success.

The Big Tuna won’t be strolling the sidelines with looks of disgust, but new coach Wade Phillips will be anxious to make a good first impression for owner Jerry Jones.

Dallas plays the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos before things get serious. They then face the Houston Texans in their third contest (the game starters see most game time) and finish off with the Minnesota Vikings.

Expect a Dallas team able to walk away with another 3-1 preseason record.

Oakland Raiders betting lines

This team scored a league-worst 12 offensive touchdowns last season, so the rookies and veterans each have something to prove. There’s a bounty of first-unit jobs up for grabs and plenty of bodies competing for those slots.

First-time head coach Lane Kiffin will be eager to impress an owner who employs the philosophy, “Just win, baby!”

The 32-year-old Kiffin has to command respect from a locker room full of players older than him. All of these factors should lead to purpose in preseason.

Don’t forget: before playing like a team that belonged in NFL Europe, Oakland went 4-1 (both SU and ATS) in exhibition games.

Stanley Cup betting

New York, NY – October 3, 2007 – The dress rehearsal is over! The NHL preseason has ended and now that fans have had a glimpse of what is to come it is time to hit the book! Stanley Cup odds are live at MySportsbook.com, the world’s largest online sportsbook and casino.

The Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings remain on top of the odds charts after an impressive start in the preseason. Betting lines opened for both teams at 6-1 in June. Since then the Sens have fallen to 7-1 and the Red Wings are now caught in a pack including the defending champion Carolina Hurricanes, the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks, all at 10-1.

MySportsbook.com has also posted props on each team’s point total for the regular season. The Senators lead the charge at 108.5 followed by the Ducks at 106.5. Detroit will attempt a repeat for the prize as the Red Wings are deadlocked with the Predators at 104.5 a piece. The temporary loss of highly touted rookie Evgeni Malkin puts a lot of pressure on the stick of assistant captain Sidney Crosby - his lowly Pittsburgh Penguins are listed at 71.5.

Even if bettors are not brave enough to put their money on the underdog, an early bet on the favorites at sportsbook.com tends to produce bigger payouts than a mid-season wager. Placing a $1,000 bet last summer on the Detroit Red Wings or Ottawa Senators would have paid out to $8,000 and $10,000 respectively, opposed to a $2,500 or $3,000 payout at the beginning of the playoffs.
